Mindfulness Breaks

Overview

Short breaks that include mindfulness quiet the brain to allow for improved thinking and emotional regulation. Research has shown that mindfulness can increase kindness, improve Sleep quality, reduce the effect of Stereotype Threat for females in math, and even improve math scores by reducing math anxiety.

Use It in the Classroom

Watch how this teacher leads the class through mindfulness and movement exercises in the first five minutes of class. Short exercises like these as a daily routine can supports students' Attention in math.

  • Teachers can integrate regular mindful breaks, such as listening to calming music or cues that prompt a few minutes of mindful breathing. Exercises can also promote student agency by allowing students to identify when they need a break, which develops their Metacognition, so that they can refocus their Attention.
