Student-led Conferences
Overview
Student-led conferences are meetings between students, parents, and teachers where the student actively leads the conversation by reflecting on their progress toward goals and sharing examples of their work. Allowing students to pick examples of their work that illustrate their progress helps their Motivation and Metacognition about their own learning. Having students reflect on their learning using rubrics and share their progress with partners or in small groups helps prepare them for student-led conferences and supports Social Awareness & Relationship Skills.
Example: Use This Strategy in the Classroom
Watch how this seventh grade student shares learning targets and samples of her work with her parents to demonstrate her progress and understanding across content areas. She also shares her goals for the upcoming trimester. Her teacher prompts her as needed during the conference and afterwards debriefs any take-aways with the rest of the teacher team.
