Reading PK-3

Systems Change

Overview

Students build their confidence and skills by reading and rereading books. Rereading promotes greater fluency and accuracy in reading, while also supporting deeper comprehension of the text.

Use It in the Classroom

Watch this fourth grade teacher model rereading. By providing examples of times when it is important to reread, such as choppy reading or not understanding, she models the process of rereading so students can develop Self-regulation skills for independent reading.

  • A teacher can model different comprehension strategies during a read aloud and ask students to reread the text to practice those strategies independently or in pairs. Reiterating the practice of rereading as a positive habit builds students' confidence in their reading. Furthermore, rereading allows students to practice their Decoding and Sight Recognition to become more fluid readers.
  • Design It into Your Product

Videos are chosen as examples of strategies in action. These choices are not endorsements of the products or evidence of use of research to develop the feature.

Learn how the One Minute Reader iPad App uses rereading to promote increased fluency, Vocabulary building, and comprehension. By rereading a text at least three times (cold read, read along, read alone), learners practice and develop more fluent reading and a deeper understanding of the text.

  • Reader's Theater Scripts allow learners to practice oral reading fluency and public speaking. Each script has several parts that are divided among learners. Through this fun performance activity, learners actively reread to practice fluent delivery of their lines.
