A student's Home Literacy Environment (HLE) is the environment parents and caregivers provide to help them gain early literacy skills. Children who develop early literacy skills before starting school by reading books and writing with caregivers often progress in school more easily and quickly.
HLE is critical for growth in early literacy skills before a child enters kindergarten as many children's books have more diverse Vocabulary and complex Syntax than children hear in typical conversation. HLE is multifaceted involving many aspects of literacy and print exposure, including:
Exposure to print rich environments in very young children also supports the development of Foundational Writing Skills. Additionally, writing practices such as writing one's own name and tracing outside of school have been shown to positively impact writing performance entering elementary school. Providing extra classroom supports and resources for families that strengthen the HLE can help create an equal foundation for all students.
More broadly, exposure to cognitively stimulating home environments which allow children to engage in learning within their homes supports students' cognitive growth and may mitigate the risk of ADHD.
Listening comprehension and Decoding are the foundational components of reading comprehension.
Communication boards are displays of graphics (e.g., pictures, symbols, illustrations) and/or words where learners can gesture or point to the displays to extend their expressive language potential.
