Brief Instruction Steps

Overview

Providing clear, short instructions can support learners' Working Memory. Breaking up instructions into short, concrete steps allows learners to pay Attention to and remember one instruction at a time. When there are multiple steps, providing written or visual instructions for learners to refer back to is helpful in supporting their Working Memory and Speed of Processing.

Apply It to Your Learning Environment

  • Pause after each instruction step and check for understanding.
  • Plan clear and concise instructions ahead of time.
  • Make sure instructions are available for learners to refer back to as they progress through different steps.
  • Multi-step processes should be separated into short, concise steps.
  • Consistency of instructions supports Working Memory.
  • Include brief, written instructions on all assignments to support family engagement and Long-term Memory.
  • Provide visuals to support oral instructions during synchronous online learning.
  • Use the chat feature to include instructions, especially when learners are in breakout rooms.
  • Provide instructions in different formats and languages for learners.
  • Provide pictures or visual representations of the steps particularly for English Language Learners.

  • Provide concise steps for learners to follow.
  • Use clear, concise vocabulary consistently across the learner's journey in the product.
  • Consistent placement and format of instructions across the platform supports Working Memory.
  • Combining audio and image based instructions can facilitate the use of both the visual and auditory channels of Working Memory to increase the likelihood of learners completing all steps.
