Common Spelling Chart

Easy access to common words promotes sight word recognition as students see the words repeatedly. In addition to increasing Vocabulary, a visual reference also reduces the load on Working Memory as students write.

Use It in the Classroom

Watch how this teacher explains how she and her students use a sight words wall in a combined 3rd and 4th grade class. By posting high frequency words on a board, students can reference them while writing.

  • External memory aids allow students to more readily recognize and remember words. Posting a common spelling chart and having students create personal charts help learners hold spellings in their Short-term Memory and builds their Vocabulary and Alphabet Knowledge.
  • Design It into Your Product

  • Students can also build these skills by having a place where they can refer to common spelling words on their screen. A digital spelling chart can be a pop-out window remaining on the screen that could also be editable and change based on individual student needs.
